Once you’ve set up the practical parts of your business and you’ve nailed the client experience, you’ll notice you need answers to more high-level questions. A coach is there to answer your questions and hold you accountable—something that can be helpful when you’re already the boss.

Thought partnership is another powerful reason to engage in coaching. It helps to have someone you can share business-related thoughts and ideas with. Your coach is an expert without a hidden agenda and their success is tied to yours, so you’re both working towards the same goal.

What about consulting? In coaching, you utilize a wide range of tools to enhance your own capabilities. Consulting is more about focusing on solving one specific problem. Coaching teaches you the skills to catch your own fish; consulting is having someone go with you to catch the fish. Coaching also tends to be more customized to each individual.

Most of the time you will intuitively know if a coach is the right fit for you. If you’re still unsure, don’t hesitate to research their work. The more you get to know them, the more connected you should feel to their philosophy if it’s a good fit. Definitely ask about what you can expect from the process and find out how you can maximize your results in their program.
